Living the good life at La Souche in Saint-Chinian

La Souche in Saint-Chinian

If you are planning to visit the famous wine village of Saint-Chinian, I have found the perfect place for you to stay. The Bed and Breakfast La Souche has an authentic atmosphere, spiced up with modern elements by the Dutch owners Monique and Tiddo Folmer. Sit back and relax on the covered terrace. Or linger by the pool while the warm smell of elderflower rises up through the air. How simple life is in the South of France!

Colourful tiles

Driving up to the picturesque hamlet of Castelbouze, just 2.5 kilometres from Saint-Chinian, immediately put me in the holiday mood. And the moment Chéri and I entered La Souche, this feeling of relaxation settled in completely. Monique and Tiddo welcomed us warmly, like old friends. And while they led us to our room, I was struck by the beautiful and original cement tiles throughout the whole house. Each and every room has its own colourful pattern, giving the mansion a unique character.

Attractive rooms

La Souche has four attractive double rooms on the first floor, each of them with a private bathroom. Chéri and I stayed in the spacious Chambre 11 (picture in the middle and on the right). This bedroom has a fantastic pool view and the vineyards in the background. Needless to say that all four rooms are equally well-designed and comfortable. As Monique loves roaming around vide-greniers, you’ll see her great second-hand finds inside and out. Luckily for the guests she has collected more than she can fit in the house, so some of it is for sale.

Spacious apartment

If you climb the majestic staircase to the second floor, you will reach La Souche’s apartment. You can rent out this self-catered apartment for four people on the top floor of the manor house. It is set up for people who want to travel in a bigger group of friends or family. The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom with bathtub and shower, a living room, a dining area and two bedrooms with double beds. And La Souche lives up to its name- it means vine stock in English- even in the apartment you will have a panorama over the vines.

Exterior area

La Souche has an inviting covered terrace with two long tables and a wonderful view of the pool and the surrounding nature. So it is the perfect spot for the tasty breakfast or the table d’hôtes Monique and Tiddo cook upon request. Chéri and I can highly recommend their delicious cooking! Then there is the pool area of course, for a bit of sunbathing or a refreshing plunge in the salted water. If you manage to leave La Souche, you will find yourself in the middle of a stunning landscape where you can go for hikes and bike trips. You can also check out the Mediterranean sea, swim in the river Orb or visit one of the many charming villages and towns. To conclude, in a paradise like La Souche, you don’t need much more for a perfect holiday!
