What to do when you are visiting the magnificent site of Pont du Gard, but forgot to bring a picnic? Well, if I may make a suggestion, you could go to restaurant “Les Terrasses” situated right in front of the aqueduct. Even during the high season, this is a great place to enjoy good food and a great view at the same time.
Roman site
Our kids had learned about the Roman period at school, and I thought it would be interesting for them to see the Pont du Gard, one of the most amazing Roman monuments in France. Also, I wanted to check out the restaurant on the right side of the river Gardon: Les Terrasses. Have to say I was a bit sceptical at first, I mean, who would expect such a nice restaurant at one of the most popular places to visit in Languedoc?
Best view
We were seated right at the end of the terrace, with the best view on the Pont du Gard. A good start! As we’re used to a set menu at lunchtime, we went for that option without hesitation. The starter was a beautiful ‘Salade Paysanne’. Not too little, not too much, just perfect. The starter was followed by a simple turkey casserole with super creamy mashed potatoes and chantarelles. Trop bon!
Uncomplicated
As the menu had three courses, we were also able to savour a dessert. The presentation of the speculoos cheesecake with an apricot compote was uncomplicated again, but it tasted divine. All three dishes were Mediterranean bistronomy at its best. Have I mentioned the view yet? Talking about picture-perfect!
