The summer season has started, which means a lot of estivales, festivals, fêtes and other parties. As a result, there are so many choices! As I had heard of le Théâtre de la Mer in Sète, a really cool theatre with a magnificent view of the sea, I wanted to check it out. And it just happened to be the Worldwide Festival, a seven day-and-night clubbing festival. No need for more reasons to go.
Fortified theatre
Originally, the theatre was a fort. This Fort Saint-Pierre, built between 1743 and 1746, defended the port of Sète against attacks by the English. After being a prison and hospital, a theatre was created in 1960. At first, it was only meant for plays. However, luckily for us, music concerts soon followed. The venue has great acoustics and is made for music.
Amazing view
Chéri and I arrived when the sun went down and were treated with an amazing view. What a magical place! And that was even before the music started. The theatre fits about 1,500 people, which makes it very intimate. And did I mention the view? Ah, the view… It definitely is the perfect venue: listening to great music in the open air with a lovely sea breeze and a beautiful clear starry night sky.
Perfect night
As night fell, we enjoyed the rhythms of Indian percussionist Sarathy Korwar. After that, groovy tunes played by the jazzy orchestral soundtracks of The Cinematic Orchestra. What a night! But don’t worry if you missed it, there are plenty of opportunities to go to a concert or festival this summer. To name just a few: Jazz à Sète, K Live, Fiest’A Sète, My Life Festival. And many, many more! In conclusion: it’s going to be a good summer at the Théâtre de la Mer.
