Rosemarie Is Montpellier’s Sunny Mediterranean Canteen

Rosemarie Montpellier

Taking a side street from one of my favourite shopping streets in Montpellier– la Rue de l’Ancien Courrier- will bring you to the city’s open-air eatery, called Rosemarie. Right at the Place Saint-Paul, behind the Saint-Roch church, you will find a jumble of cheerful tables and chairs. And you will be even happier when you have a plate of delicious food in front of you. You can tell that Rosemarie’s staff put their heart and soul into their homemade dishes.

Full Swing

At the end of the endless summer holidays- more than two months…- I took the twins on a day trip to Montpellier before the school year started in full swing. All that walking around made us hungry. But of course, I had a nice restaurant on my wish list: Rosemarie. Once we arrived, I was glad I had made a reservation, as the seats filled up pretty quickly. You can also come without a reservation, but be prepared to queue.

Testing Thoroughly

While we sat comfortably under a parasol, which provided some very welcome shade, the three of us chose something tasty. Going out with Mum means enjoying a starter, main course and dessert, because a restaurant has to be thoroughly tested, of course. There were plenty of choices, including vegetarian options, and we decided to share some tapas-style starters: hummus with freshly baked bread (6 euros), serrano ham (6.50 euros) and trout tartare (6.50 euros). I was pleased with these healthy choices, and the children merrily tucked in too.

Deliciousness

While we were playing a game, the main courses arrived. I always find it amusing to see what the twins choose when we’re not at a typical burger and chips place. Middlest went for the safe option, picking steak, chips, and salad. Better safe than sorry, he thought, and the quality was good. My daughter was more adventurous and chose a grilled melon salad with cuttlefish and za’atar. I went for the vegetarian grilled aubergine, topped with all kinds of deliciousness. For dessert, the twins each had a raspberry cheesecake with a good drizzle of coulis, while I savoured my velvety brownie. It was a delicious end to a successful lunch, and a lovely reminder of summer.
